These figures count the winery listings on this site. Every listing carries its own sources and verification date. Anything we could not verify is left out of the count, so the real numbers may be higher. A founding year may refer to the parent company — often a sake brewery — rather than the year winemaking began.

About this region

Yamanashi is described by the prefecture as the birthplace of Japanese wine: according to its official account, two young men from Katsunuma studied winemaking in France in the early Meiji era and brought the techniques home, and the industry has grown steadily since. The prefecture states that around 100 wineries are clustered here, producing roughly 30% of Japan's wine. In July 2013, Yamanashi became the first wine region in Japan to be granted a Geographical Indication (GI) — a protected place-name that only qualifying local wines may use.

Climate
The GI Yamanashi documentation notes that the area is little affected by the ocean, and so is relatively sheltered from the rainy season and typhoons. It also highlights a wide daily temperature swing — hot afternoons followed by sharply cooler mornings and evenings.
Soil
According to the GI Yamanashi documentation, the vineyards sit on gently sloping ground with soils formed from weathered granite and andesite — rock broken down over time — described as deep, fertile and well-draining.
