About
Japan Winery Map is an independently run guide that aims to cover every winery in Japan.
Data policy
- Every page shows the source URLs it rests on, each with the date it was last checked.
- Anything we could not verify is marked “unverified” — we never guess.
- We track new openings and closures and keep the data fresh.
Current coverage
660 wineries listed: 325 with full details, 332 with partial information, 3 basic entries.
“Detailed” means a street-level address and visiting information are confirmed, together with several of: opening hours, grape varieties, description, official site, and year founded. “Basic only” means the producer’s existence is confirmed but details could not be obtained — often because the official site is gone. Entries are promoted as soon as they can be confirmed.
The listings are backed by 3909 source URLs, and we have confirmed coordinates for 658 wineries.
How we check that no producer licensed since 2014 is missing
Counting our own entries cannot prove that the list is complete. Since 2014 the National Tax Agency has published a list of newly issued alcohol production licences, broken down by category, in which a holder appears regardless of their wishes or how well known they are, so it can be checked from outside on the same terms. It is not a register of every currently licensed site: it lists licences newly granted from 2014 onward. What this comparison can show is therefore whether any producer licensed since 2014 is missing; producers established before then rest on other evidence. Against the 641 licences whose category includes fruit wine, 490 were matched to a listed winery, 151 were confirmed not to be wineries, and 0 remain unmatched. Holding a licence does not mean production is ongoing: universities, research institutes and drinks manufacturers hold fruit-wine licences for trial production, and sake breweries mostly use theirs for plum wine and liqueurs.
The number of licensed production sites is itself published each year. In 令和6年度 there were 581 sites whose principal category was fruit wine, and 220 more that hold a fruit-wine licence alongside another principal category. This site lists 660, which falls between the two. Holding a licence is not the same as making Japanese wine — a sake brewery's fruit-wine licence is usually for plum wine — so the numbers are not expected to match exactly. But an order-of-magnitude gap would show that entries are missing or over-counted. The statistic is a fiscal-year-end figure published more than a year later; our count reflects a later date.
