About this region

In 2021 Nagano received a Geographical Indication (GI) designation for wine from Japan's National Tax Agency — an official scheme under which only drinks meeting set standards may carry the place name. In 2013 the prefecture adopted the Shinshu Wine Valley Initiative, dividing its production areas into four valleys (Kikyogahara, Chikumagawa, Japan Alps and Tenryugawa); the 2.0 revision of March 2023 added a fifth, Yatsugatake Seiroku. The prefecture's own document records growth from 25 wine-producing wineries in March 2013 to 71 as of January 2023, and the National Tax Agency's 2025 survey puts the number of wineries in the prefecture at 81.

Climate
According to the National Tax Agency's production standard for GI Nagano, the prefecture is ringed by mountains of 2,000–3,000 m, which shelters it from the rainy season and typhoons; annual rainfall is described as around 1,000 mm, a low figure. Cumulative sunshine hours from April to October — the grape-growing season — are put at roughly 1,200 hours, so disease and stunted growth caused by excess humidity or too little sun are said to be uncommon. Most vineyards sit above 500 m in elevation, giving a generally cool climate with a wide gap between daytime and night-time temperatures.
Soil
The same production standard describes the soils of the alluvial fans around the rims of Nagano's basins — the gently sloping, fan-shaped ground formed where rivers emerge from the mountains onto flat land — as a permeable mix of pebbles and sand with good drainage.
