About this region

On 28 June 2018 Japan's National Tax Agency designated "Hokkaido" as a Geographical Indication (GI) for wine — the national scheme that governs who may put a region's name on a label. The Hokkaido prefectural government reports 75 wineries in the prefecture as of February 2026, roughly three times the number a decade earlier. The agency's production standard names Yoichi (Shiribeshi), Iwamizawa (Sorachi), Furano (Kamikawa) and Ikeda (Tokachi) as the main grape-growing areas.

Climate
According to the National Tax Agency's production standard, Hokkaido is a cool region where the heat accumulated over the growing season stays low. Monthly average temperatures from April to October remain at or below 15°C, and the standard says this coolness lets grapes retain plentiful organic acids — the compounds behind a wine's acidity. Over the same April-to-October window the vineyards get more than 1,100 hours of sunshine, and the wide gap between day and night temperatures is credited with producing grapes high in sugar. Humidity is low and rainfall in that period stays under 700mm, which the standard says holds down fungal disease. On this basis it describes the region as suited to German varieties and, among the French ones, to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
