These figures count the winery listings on this site. Every listing carries its own sources and verification date. Anything we could not verify is left out of the count, so the real numbers may be higher. A founding year may refer to the parent company — often a sake brewery — rather than the year winemaking began.

About this region

Aomori sits at the northern tip of Honshu, and the prefectural government describes grapes as its second-largest fruit crop after apples. Campbell Early is grown mainly in the southern part of the prefecture and Steuben in the Tsugaru area, where the town of Tsuruta is described as Japan's leading Steuben-producing district. On the Shimokita Peninsula, growers use the cool climate to raise wine varieties such as Pinot Noir — said to be difficult to grow in Japan — and those grapes are made into "Shimokita Wine".

Climate
According to the Aomori prefectural government, the prefecture is bounded by sea on three sides and split down the middle by the Ou Mountains, so its climate varies sharply from district to district. The two signature differences are heavy winter snow in the Tsugaru area and the yamase — a cold, damp easterly wind that blows over the Pacific side in summer, bringing many cool, humid days there. In winter, cold moist air hits the Ou Mountains and drops snow on Tsugaru, while the Pacific side, sheltered by the same range, sees many dry, clear days — so growing conditions differ even within one prefecture.
