A group of hybrid varieties including both white and black types, in Japan usually making light, fresh-acidity wines in cold regions.

A collective name for the series of hybrid varieties created by the French breeder Albert Seibel by crossing European and American grapes; they are identified by number, as in 'Seibel 13053'. As intended by the breeding, they tend to be relatively resistant to disease and cold, and in Japan they have been grown mainly in cool regions such as Hokkaido. The white types generally give crisp dry wines with clear acidity, while the black types tend to give lighter reds of moderate colour and soft astringency. Because each number behaves differently, a label that says only 'Seibel' can taste quite different from producer to producer.

Notes on aroma and taste describe general tendencies for this grape, not claims about any particular wine — the actual character depends on the producer and how it is made.

For this grape we have not yet confirmed a primary source for its origin or growing regions. (Winery entries always carry a source and the date it was checked.)

Seibel at the Japan Wine Competition

14 awards in the published results carry “Seibel” in the entry name, across 4 wineries and 14 years. These are read from the entry names, not from declared grape composition, so wines whose names do not mention the grape are not included.

Wineries with the most awards

Ordered by how many awards we list. Producers differ in how many wines they entered and in how many years they entered, so this is not a ranking of quality.

Wines that have won more than once

Grouped by producer and wine, showing those with three or more awards. Names come from the published entry names, with the vintage removed because each row spans several vintages.
