These figures count the winery listings on this site. Every listing carries its own sources and verification date. Anything we could not verify is left out of the count, so the real numbers may be higher. A founding year may refer to the parent company — often a sake brewery — rather than the year winemaking began.

About this region

Winemaking in Hyogo grew out of Kobe City's push to promote agriculture by planting wine grapes. Kobe Winery's official history records that it obtained a brewing licence in 1983 and began making wine in earnest, with the agricultural park completed and Kobe Wine going on sale the following year. More recently the industry has spread to Awaji Island: the prefecture reports that grape growing began in the Nii district of Awaji City in 2019, and AWAJISHIMA WINERY COMPLEX opened in March 2024.

Climate
Kobe's official tourism site describes the Nishi Ward area as having a Seto Inland Sea climate — little rain, plenty of sun — well suited to growing grapes. The vineyards lie in Kobe's Nishi and Kita wards within sight of the Rokko foothills; Kobe Winery's own site puts the total, including its estate plots, at around 40 hectares.
