These figures count the winery listings on this site. Every listing carries its own sources and verification date. Anything we could not verify is left out of the count, so the real numbers may be higher. A founding year may refer to the parent company — often a sake brewery — rather than the year winemaking began.

About this region

Iwate grows fruit on the strength of a cool climate with a wide gap between daytime and night-time temperatures. According to the prefecture's Fruit Farming Promotion Plan (FY2026-2030), 127 of the 356 hectares planted to grapes in 2023 were wine grapes, and the plan notes that as more wineries commit to prefecture-grown fruit, securing a steady supply of high-quality wine grapes has become a priority. The city of Hanamaki bills itself as a wine town with more than 70 years of grape growing behind it, while the town of Kuzumaki makes wine chiefly from locally grown wild yamabudo grapes.

Climate
The prefecture's fruit farming plan identifies Iwate's underlying advantage as a cool climate with a large daily temperature range — that is, a wide gap between day and night. The same plan reports that warming linked to climate change has begun to cause trouble: buds break earlier in spring and are caught by late frosts, and summer heat leaves fruit poorly coloured.
