These figures count the winery listings on this site. Every listing carries its own sources and verification date. Anything we could not verify is left out of the count, so the real numbers may be higher. A founding year may refer to the parent company — often a sake brewery — rather than the year winemaking began.
About this region
Okayama is known as a "kingdom of fruit," a major producer of table grapes. The prefecture's agricultural division states that Okayama grows more Pione than anywhere else in Japan, alongside Muscat of Alexandria, Shine Muscat, Seto Giants and Aurora Black, a variety bred by the prefecture. Its official tourism site describes wineries scattered across quite different settings within that fruit-growing landscape: the cool Hiruzen highlands in Maniwa, the limestone plateau of Tetta in Niimi, and Funao in Kurashiki, a Muscat-growing district.
- Climate
- Okayama's official tourism site describes the prefecture — hemmed in by the Chugoku Mountains to the north and looking out on the Seto Inland Sea to the south — as one of Japan's leading grape-growing areas, with little rain and long hours of sunshine. It attributes the region's aromatic, fruit-forward grapes to a climate with marked temperature swings, clean water and fertile soil. Conditions are not uniform across the prefecture, however: the high-altitude Hiruzen area is described as comparatively cool.
- Soil
- According to the prefecture's official tourism site, Hiruzen in Maniwa has free-draining volcanic-ash soil, while Tetta in Niimi sits on limestone at around 400 metres above sea level. There is no single soil type across the prefecture; each district has its own geology.
