A white member of the Pinot family: quiet in aroma, round in body and easy with almost any food.
It belongs to the same family as Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris and is understood to have arisen as a colour mutation within that group. Called Weissburgunder in Germany and Austria and Pinot Bianco in northern Italy, it has its heartland across that band of Europe together with Alsace. Apple and almond aromas are quiet rather than showy, and while it lacks Chardonnay's weight it balances acidity and roundness in a way that flatters almost any dish. Plantings in Japan are very limited, currently in Hokkaido and Niigata, and it is also used as a base for sparkling wine.
Notes on aroma and taste describe general tendencies for this grape, not claims about any particular wine — the actual character depends on the producer and how it is made.
For this grape we have not yet confirmed a primary source for its origin or growing regions. (Winery entries always carry a source and the date it was checked.)
Pinot Blanc at the Japan Wine Competition
30 awards in the published results carry “Pinot Blanc” in the entry name, across 4 wineries and 16 years. These are read from the entry names, not from declared grape composition, so wines whose names do not mention the grape are not included.
