These figures count the winery listings on this site. Every listing carries its own sources and verification date. Anything we could not verify is left out of the count, so the real numbers may be higher. A founding year may refer to the parent company — often a sake brewery — rather than the year winemaking began.

About this region

Winemaking in Kyoto Prefecture centres on Kyotamba, a town near the prefecture's geographical middle. KYOTO SIDE, a site run by the prefectural government, calls the town's Tamba Wine "Kyoto's first winery," founded in 1978 and in full operation from 1979. About 85% of the winery's 1,000-tsubo grounds is under vine; roughly 50 varieties are grown on trial, while around ten go into the wines. Kyotamba describes itself as a farming and forestry town on the Tamba Highlands, ringed by mountains of 400–600m, with forest covering some 83% of its area.

Climate
The town of Kyotamba describes its climate as combining inland and Sea-of-Japan characteristics. Summers are relatively cool and upland compared with basins such as Kyoto City, with a wide swing between day and night temperatures. Winters are sharply cold, but seasonal winds off the Sea of Japan bring frequent drizzle and sometimes snow. Fog forms readily on the southern lowlands from autumn into winter, and rainfall, the town notes, tends to be comparatively low through the year.
