These figures count the winery listings on this site. Every listing carries its own sources and verification date. Anything we could not verify is left out of the count, so the real numbers may be higher. A founding year may refer to the parent company — often a sake brewery — rather than the year winemaking began.

About this region

Okinawa's wine scene is built on very different foundations from the rest of Japan's. The prefectural website reports that in the village of Onna, wine is made from ryukyu-ganebu — a wild grape the page describes as "a yamabudo native to Okinawa" and a local speciality — by a restaurant chef who obtained a brewing licence in October 2023 under a National Strategic Special Zone exemption, and who handles growing, fermenting and bottling himself. Another prefectural page explains that Okinawa's warm climate supports fruit such as pineapple, mango, passionfruit and shikuwasa, and the city of Nago's tourism plan lists a pineapple attraction where visitors can tour a winery on site.

Climate
The city of Nago's tourism plan states that Nago, "like the rest of Okinawa Prefecture, falls within the humid subtropical climate zone," and that the strong influence of the Kuroshio current keeps winters comparatively mild with little variation in temperature across the year. Over the 1981-2010 statistical period the plan gives Nago an annual mean temperature of 22.6°C and annual rainfall of 2,018.9mm.
