Best known as a table grape with a showy Muscat aroma; occasionally also made into white wine.

Shine Muscat is a relatively new grape bred by NARO, Japan's national agricultural research organisation, and registered in 2006. It spread across Japan as a seedless table grape that can be eaten skin and all. Very little is planted specifically for wine, but some wineries do vinify table-grape fruit, and the wines often retain the variety's showy Muscat perfume. Acidity is not high, so the style tends to lead with aroma and a sense of sweetness rather than sharpness. Because the fruit fetches more as a table grape, wine volumes are limited and prices tend to be higher.
