These figures count the winery listings on this site. Every listing carries its own sources and verification date. Anything we could not verify is left out of the count, so the real numbers may be higher. A founding year may refer to the parent company — often a sake brewery — rather than the year winemaking began.

About this region

Ibaraki has seen a steady wave of new wineries in recent years. The Ibaraki Wine Association, formed in April 2025 to promote the prefecture's wine industry and wine culture, had eight member wineries as of November 2025 according to the prefectural magazine — spread across Hitachiota, Naka, Mito, Tsukuba, Ushiku and Sakai. An interview in the same magazine describes Ibaraki as having the sixth-largest number of wineries of any prefecture, and in Ushiku — one of the earliest places in Japan where wine was made — a producer is working to revive that tradition.

Climate
In an interview carried by the prefecture's public-information magazine, an oenologist (a certified winemaking technologist) points to two things that make Ibaraki promising for grapes: a large expanse of open farmland, and the fact that the prefecture opens onto the Pacific, which can soften both summer heat and winter cold. As a result, the interview says, the prefecture contains areas with quite different climates and has the potential to yield a wide variety of wines.
