These figures count the winery listings on this site. Every listing carries its own sources and verification date. Anything we could not verify is left out of the count, so the real numbers may be higher. A founding year may refer to the parent company — often a sake brewery — rather than the year winemaking began.

About this region

Ehime is best known for citrus, but the prefecture states that the Ozu and Uchiko area forms its largest growing district for deciduous fruit — persimmons, chestnuts and grapes. Uchiko Town traces its grape growing back a long way: it says the first vines, of the Campbell Early variety, went in around 1913, and that Kyoho, Pione and Aki Queen are grown there today. Uchiko Winery sits within that fruit-growing country, in the Kitayama district of Ozu City.

Climate
Uchiko Town describes itself as mild in climate, with fruit growing thriving on basin terrain that combines a wide day-to-night temperature gap with good drainage. Uchiko Winery likewise credits that difference between day and night temperatures for the quality of its grapes and wine.
Soil
Uchiko Winery describes its grapes as growing on diluvial soil — terrace ground built up by ancient deposits — which it says drains well and is rich in trace elements, the minerals vines need in small amounts.
