These figures count the winery listings on this site. Every listing carries its own sources and verification date. Anything we could not verify is left out of the count, so the real numbers may be higher. A founding year may refer to the parent company — often a sake brewery — rather than the year winemaking began.
About this region
Winemaking in Yamaguchi grew out of a sake brewery. The prefecture's official tourism site explains that Nagayama Shuzo in Sanyo-Onoda City produces sake, shochu and wine, and that the same attention to local rice and water that shaped its sake eventually led it into wine. According to that site, the company began growing grapes in 1995 and started making wine in 1999.
- Climate
- The prefecture's official tourism site notes that Yamaguchi gets a fair amount of rain, which has long made European grape varieties — vulnerable to wet weather — difficult to grow here. It explains that Yamaguchi Winery therefore uses rain covers over the vines, sheltering Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc from the rain as they ripen.
- Soil
- The same site describes the area's soil as slightly alkaline, derived from the Akiyoshidai limestone plateau that spreads across the prefecture, and says it is considered well suited to European grape varieties.
