These figures count the winery listings on this site. Every listing carries its own sources and verification date. Anything we could not verify is left out of the count, so the real numbers may be higher. A founding year may refer to the parent company — often a sake brewery — rather than the year winemaking began.

About this region

Shizuoka's wineries are split between two quite different settings: the Izu Peninsula and the foothills of Mt. Fuji. According to the Japan Wineries Association, Nakaizu Winery in Izu City began trial grape growing in 1995 and moved to full-scale production and sales in 2000; it now takes around 60 tonnes of fruit a year from roughly 10 hectares of its own vineyards plus about 1.5 hectares of contracted vineyards in Yamanashi, producing some 150,000 bottles annually. Fujisan Winery in Fujinomiya City had its first vintage in 2004 and works with the Koshu grape under the banner of "making wine that speaks to the world."

Climate
According to the Japan Wineries Association, Nakaizu Winery's own vineyards lie at just under 300 m above sea level in the middle of the Izu Peninsula. Fujisan Winery, by contrast, stands at 900 m inside the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, ringed by 1,000-metre peaks with Mt. Fuji at their centre. Even within a single prefecture, then, the vineyards sit at markedly different elevations.
