Shimane's grape growing has been built around Delaware, above all in the city of Izumo. The prefecture's Fruit Farming Promotion Plan (June 2022) records that Delaware planting began in Izumo's Taisha district in 1936, that heated greenhouse growing was taken up from 1965, and that at its peak the district produced 3,900 tonnes a year worth 3.1 billion yen. The plan states that Shimane's Delaware output is high nationally and ranks first for April-to-June shipments from heated houses, and that alongside sales to the fresh market, growers ship wine-destined Delaware in partnership with Shimane Winery.

Climate

The prefecture's fruit farming plan is candid about the conditions: cold, snow and scarce sunshine in winter, and long rains in the tsuyu season, add up to weather it calls "not necessarily well suited" to fruit growing. Districts built their reputation anyway, the plan says, through advanced techniques such as heated greenhouse cultivation of Delaware. For Izumo, the heart of the growing area, it gives an average temperature of 14-15°C and 1,700mm of annual rainfall — mild, but humid year-round and generally short on sunshine.

Soil

A prefectural page notes that Shimane's Delaware is grown "across a wide area of the prefecture, including the sand-dune land of Izumo and the hill country of Masuda." No description of the soils' composition itself was found in the prefectural material checked here.
