A relatively modern cross of Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache, giving a dark but approachable red.

Created in 1961 at a research station in southern France by crossing Cabernet Sauvignon with Grenache, it is named after the coastal town of Marseillan. Small berries and high pigment give a solidly coloured wine, with black-fruit aromas carrying Cabernet's structure alongside Grenache's roundness. Its footprint has been widening, notably through plantings in China. In Japan it appears in small amounts across Ibaraki, Shizuoka, Yamanashi, Shimane and Kochi, and it suits roasted meat and Chinese dishes built on savoury sauces.
