These figures count the winery listings on this site. Every listing carries its own sources and verification date. Anything we could not verify is left out of the count, so the real numbers may be higher. A founding year may refer to the parent company — often a sake brewery — rather than the year winemaking began.

About this region

The National Tax Agency's 2025 survey counts five wineries in Gifu. In the same survey the three wineries that responded took in a combined 6 tonnes of domestically grown fresh grapes for wine, listed as Niagara, Merlot, Chardonnay and Koshu. For the Hida region, the city of Takayama states that wild mountain grapes (yamabudo) grow naturally in the hills around Hida-Takayama and have long been used as raw material for wine and juice.

Climate
For the Hida region, the city of Takayama explains that Hida-Takayama is high and cold country with a wide gap between morning and evening temperatures, which raises the sugar content of its fruit. Rainfall is high, and since around 2018 younger growers have begun cultivating grapes under rain-shelter houses (structures roofed to keep rain off the vines). The Japan Wineries Association also notes that the vineyard of a winery in Kukuno, Takayama, lies in a cool spot at 800 m elevation and grows mainly white-wine varieties.
