About this region

The prefecture's official site, Very Good Local Tochigi, introduces nine wineries in the prefecture. It notes that some producers date back to the Meiji era — Watanabe Vineyard & Winery (NASU WINE) marked its 140th anniversary — while others, such as Coco Farm & Winery, trace their history to the clearing of vineyard land in 1958. Long-established cellars and newer ones sit side by side here.

Climate
The same site explains that wine grapes suit a cool climate with a large gap between morning and evening temperatures, and describes Tochigi as fitting those conditions.
