These figures count the winery listings on this site. Every listing carries its own sources and verification date. Anything we could not verify is left out of the count, so the real numbers may be higher. A founding year may refer to the parent company — often a sake brewery — rather than the year winemaking began.

About this region

In June 2021 Osaka received a Geographical Indication (GI) designation for wine from Japan's National Tax Agency — an official scheme under which only drinks meeting set standards may carry the place name. The prefecture explains that GI Osaka wines are built mainly on table-grape varieties, above all Delaware, and are marked by concentrated fruit, gentle acidity and a pleasant savoury depth. Grape growing is rooted in the Kawachi area around cities such as Kashiwara and Habikino, and Osaka wine has been recognised by the Agency for Cultural Affairs as a "100-Year Food" — a food culture created in the Meiji and Taisho eras. The National Tax Agency's 2025 survey counts 10 wineries in the prefecture; the four that responded took in 150 tonnes of domestically grown fresh grapes for wine, of which Delaware accounted for 69 tonnes.

Climate
According to the National Tax Agency's production standard for GI Osaka, Osaka Bay is part of the Seto Inland Sea and does not face the open ocean, and seasonal winds are blocked by the Chugoku and Shikoku mountain ranges; the result is described as stable weather through the year, mild and with little rainfall. Summer rainfall in particular is said to be markedly low, which suits healthy growth during veraison — the stage when grapes begin to change colour — and allows a steady harvest of well-coloured fruit with little splitting.
Soil
The same production standard describes the foothills of the Kongo mountains, where the main growing area of Kawachi lies: the underlying geology is granite characteristic of the Median Tectonic Line, and together with a gently sloping surface layer of sandy loam this gives good drainage and airflow. Because the land descends gradually from mountains through hills to the Osaka plain, sunlight is not blocked and ample sunshine hours are secured.
