These figures count the winery listings on this site. Every listing carries its own sources and verification date. Anything we could not verify is left out of the count, so the real numbers may be higher. A founding year may refer to the parent company — often a sake brewery — rather than the year winemaking began.

About this region

Winemaking in Gunma has developed separately in several quite different places. Shinto Village's official site describes the village, near the centre of the prefecture, as grape country, with 25 pick-your-own vineyards lined up along its slopes; Gunma Budoshu (Shinto Winery), founded by grape growers of the Haruna foothills who joined forces, makes wine entirely from domestically grown fruit according to the village. On the north-western flank of Mt. Akagi, meanwhile, Okutone Winery in Showa Village states that it has been growing grapes on that site since 2000. In revising its fruit-farming promotion plan, the prefecture reports that it added a section on wine grapes to the chapter on grapes.

Climate
Conditions vary considerably from place to place. Okutone Winery states that its vineyard sits at 700 metres on the flank of Mt. Akagi in Showa Village, where sunny but cool conditions ripen the fruit, and that it plants European varieties to make use of that coolness. Shinto Village describes its own grape country as spreading out in open country within sight of Mt. Haruna.
