These figures count the winery listings on this site. Every listing carries its own sources and verification date. Anything we could not verify is left out of the count, so the real numbers may be higher. A founding year may refer to the parent company — often a sake brewery — rather than the year winemaking began.

About this region

Winemaking in Fukuoka centers on the Chikugo region, known for its fruit. In Tajimaru, Kurume City, Michishige Ochi judged the soil to be suitable and grape growing began in 1957; the area at the foot of the Mino mountains became known for Kyoho grapes. According to Fukuoka Prefecture's official tourism site, Tajimaru is home to the prefecture's oldest winery, where Japan's first Kyoho wine was born; that wine, launched in 1972, is said to be made entirely from Kyoho, a grape long considered difficult to vinify.

Climate
Fukuoka has a temperate climate described as generally mild with a moderate amount of rain. The inland plains centered on the Chikugo Plain are ringed by mountains on three sides and show the traits of an inland climate. The prefecture describes the Chikuho Basin as having a wide daily range (the gap between a day's high and low) and annual range in temperature, typical of basin country.
