About this region
Winemaking in Fukui grew up around yamabudo, the wild grape native to Japan. According to the Japan Wineries Association, Hakusan Winery (Hakusan Yamabudo Wine Co.) in Ochiai, Ono City, was founded in 2000 as the first winery in Fukui to farm its own vineyards. It sits in the green countryside of Ono — an area known as Oku-Echizen — on terraces spreading out from the foot of Mt. Kyogatake in the Hakusan range, and works mainly with wild yamabudo and its crossings "Shokoshi" and "Yama Sauvignon", aiming for wines that balance lively acidity with fruit.
