Have the Varieties Producers Plant Changed Over Time?
Data / Published 2026-08-27
When planted varieties are grouped by the period in which producers were founded, different names appear among older and newer groups. This is not a measure of planted area across the market; it is a reading of the producer records that could be confirmed.

First, what is being counted?
This table counts producers for whom both a founding year and planted varieties could be confirmed. A producer with a known founding year but no variety information is excluded, as is a producer with varieties listed but no confirmed founding year. Only records with both pieces of information are grouped by founding period.
| Founded | Range | Producers with varieties known | Most-grown varieties (producers) |
|---|---|---|---|
For that reason, the size of each group is not the number of all producers that actually exist. Newer producers in particular may still be organising their plantings or may not yet have published the information on an official site. Read the table with the possibility that the newer groups have a thinner documented base.
Varieties visible among older producers
Koshu and Muscat Bailey A appear near the top among producers founded in the older periods. Both recur in accounts of Japanese wine history: official materials describe Koshu as a white grape cultivated in Japan over a long period, and Muscat Bailey A as a black grape created through crossing in Japan.
This does not mean that older producers plant only these two varieties. Merlot also appears in the same group, and some producers grow several varieties in one vineyard. The table shows which variety names occur most often among confirmed producers in each group; it does not compare vineyard area or harvest volume.
Varieties visible among newer producers
Among the newer founding groups, Chardonnay, Merlot, and Pinot Noir appear near the top. Varieties that have been widely grown overseas are also being chosen for newer vineyards in Japan. Japanese wine is not made only from varieties that originated in Japan.
What appears here is the combination of varieties a producer has planted. Award totals, bottles sold, vineyard area, and harvest volume by variety cannot be inferred from this table. Even when the same variety name appears often, the regions, training systems, and winemaking ideas behind those plantings need not be the same.
Purchased grapes are a different question
The count includes varieties confirmed as planted by the producer itself. Grapes bought from contracted growers or juice sourced from a region may be used in a producer’s wines, but they do not enter a count of “varieties that producer planted.” This keeps producers who grow and make wine together distinct from producers who purchase their raw material.
A producer may also be planting a variety without publishing it. That possibility does not appear in the table because it cannot be confirmed. Here too, a blank is not a finding that the variety is absent. It records the boundary of what could be established from public information.
How should the change be read?
The table alone cannot determine why the varieties visible in the groups change with founding period. Climate, cultivation techniques, market demand, access to planting material, and the producer’s own experience could all matter. The pattern can be read as a change brought by the times, or as a change in the choices made by producers.
Our reading: do not apply the idea that “Japanese wine means Koshu” to all newer producers. Koshu and Muscat Bailey A remain important varieties native to Japan, but current plantings also include international varieties. Use the table as an entry point for investigating the background of each region and producer, not as a final conclusion.
