When were Japan’s wineries established?

Data / Published 2026-08-27

We look across Japanese wineries by the decades in which their founding years can be verified. The table shows the growth of newer producers alongside long-running ones, while remaining a lower bound because many founding years are not yet confirmed.

We count only verified founding years

This table counts wineries whose producer record on this site includes a founding year and a source supporting it. Producers whose founding year could not be verified are not placed into a decade. The result is therefore not a complete history of every Japanese winery, but a lower bound based on records that can be checked. The method follows the site’s policy of leaving unknown information unfilled instead of guessing.

“Founded” does not necessarily mean the year wine production began. Some producers were first established as sake breweries or farms and only later started making wine. When a producer publishes the founding year of its company or parent organisation, that meaning is retained in the record. Do not silently read it as the start of winemaking; check the explanation and source on the individual producer page.

The pattern visible in the table

Read as a timeline, the table shows long-running producers alongside a concentration of producers established in more recent decades. That is a data pattern suggesting that the number of entities making wine has expanded. It may not represent every producer in those periods, because founding years that have not yet been verified may belong to any decade.

Counts only the 454 producers whose founding year could be confirmed, out of 660 listed. **Producers with no confirmed year are absent, so these are lower bounds.** “Founded” is also not always when winemaking began — some producers publish the year the sake brewery or farm started.

“Established in the decade” counts producers whose founding year was verified within that decade. “Cumulative” adds the verified producers through the relevant decade. Neither column is a count of wineries still operating, nor a count of producers making wine during that whole period. Closures, succession, and brand changes require checking the individual producer record.

Hold newness and history apart

Our reading: A large presence of newer producers does not mean that Japanese wine has no history. Older producers remain, some wineries grew out of sake breweries or farms, and new participants have joined them. A founding year is not a quality score; it is a starting point for asking how and from what background a producer began making wine.

When a decade or producer interests you, inspect the individual page for what the founding year refers to and which source supports it. If the start of winemaking is published separately, keep that distinction visible. For producers not yet verified, new evidence can extend this lower-bound view.
