A thick-skinned white grape that resists rain, combining high acidity with concentration in both dry and sweet styles.
This is the grape behind the sweet whites of Jurançon in the Pyrenean foothills of South-West France. Small berries and thick skins mean the fruit resists damage even when rain falls at harvest, and growers have traditionally left bunches on the vine to lose water and concentrate. Its very high acidity keeps even sweet versions from tasting flabby. That resistance to rain is why it has been spreading in Japan: among the wineries listed here it appears in Nagano, Ibaraki, Yamanashi, Tochigi, Iwate, Gunma, Kanagawa, Yamagata and Kagoshima — one of the widest spreads of any European white.
Notes on aroma and taste describe general tendencies for this grape, not claims about any particular wine — the actual character depends on the producer and how it is made.
For this grape we have not yet confirmed a primary source for its origin or growing regions. (Winery entries always carry a source and the date it was checked.)
