Earliest founding year

These figures count the winery listings on this site. Every listing carries its own sources and verification date. Anything we could not verify is left out of the count, so the real numbers may be higher. A founding year may refer to the parent company — often a sake brewery — rather than the year winemaking began.

Tottori's official prefectural site, Torinet, introduces Hojo Winery in Hokuei Town, Daisen Winery in Hoki Town, and Totto Winery in Tottori City's Kokufu district. Hojo Winery is listed as having been founded in 1944, making it a long-established producer within the prefecture. The growing sites are spread across quite different settings, from coastal sand dunes to the foot of Mt. Daisen.

Climate

The prefectural site describes Daisen Winery's vineyards as lying at the foot of Mt. Daisen, land it calls well suited to growing grapes. Of the Kokufu district in Tottori City, it notes a broad basin ringed by mountains with the clear Fukuro River running through it, an area where grape growing has long been common.

Soil

According to the prefectural site, Hojo Winery grows its grapes on sand-dune soil — sandy ground built up from coastal sand — which it describes as rare worldwide. This applies to the vineyards in Hokuei Town rather than to every growing site in the prefecture.
