About this region

In prefectural material, winemaking in Saitama is presented mainly as a Chichibu-area story. The prefecture explains that fruit growing in Chichibu centres on pick-your-own farms for grapes and other fruit, and that processing into dried persimmon, jam and wine is active. In the National Tax Agency's count of production sites that produced or shipped wine during 2024, Saitama had 5 wineries (519 nationwide). Chichibu Wine in Ogano Town had been making wine for about 80 years as of 2019, while Usagida Winery in Shimoyoshida, Chichibu City began brewing in-house in 2015 and, per a prefectural interview article, insists on wine "born in Chichibu, raised in Chichibu, made in Chichibu."

Climate
In a prefectural interview article, a producer in Chichibu City says "there is little rain, so grapes are easy to grow," and explains that "although summer highs are high, mornings drop below 25C; when a good day-night temperature gap develops, it translates into sugar and you get sweet grapes." For Ogano Town the prefecture likewise cites the "morning-and-evening temperature gap," noting that a wider gap deepens skin colour and yields better-quality fruit.
Soil
Prefectural material explains that Chichibu Wine "grows part of its wine grapes itself, making use of Ogano Town's climate (the morning-and-evening temperature gap) and its alkaline soil." The sources checked say nothing about soils in other parts of the prefecture.
