These figures count the winery listings on this site. Every listing carries its own sources and verification date. Anything we could not verify is left out of the count, so the real numbers may be higher. A founding year may refer to the parent company — often a sake brewery — rather than the year winemaking began.

About this region

Miyazaki's winemaking is built largely on grape varieties that are also enjoyed as table fruit. According to the prefecture's quarterly magazine, Aya Winery in Aya Town was established in 1994 by Unkai Shuzo, a maker of honkaku shochu, and is described as one of the pioneers of winemaking in southern Kyushu. Tsuno Winery, in Tsuno Town, sits on a plateau looking out over the Hyuga-nada Sea and makes its wine entirely from grapes grown in the surrounding Osuzu district.

Climate
According to Miyazaki's official tourism site, Tsuno Winery stands 150-200 m above sea level on the Makiuchi plateau, ringed by the Hyuga-nada Sea and the Osuzu mountains, with views across the Miyazaki plain. Conditions vary within the prefecture: in the prefectural quarterly, a production staff member at Gokase Winery in the north-west says that "in terms of both soil and climate, I think Gokase suits white wine." The same magazine reports that Aya Winery uses cool fermentation to preserve the fresh flavours of table grapes, running at 9°C for three weeks where fermentation would normally finish in a week at around 15°C.
