These figures count the winery listings on this site. Every listing carries its own sources and verification date. Anything we could not verify is left out of the count, so the real numbers may be higher. A founding year may refer to the parent company — often a sake brewery — rather than the year winemaking began.

About this region

Miyagi's wineries have appeared largely since the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. The prefecture's Third Basic Plan under the Miyagi Food and Agriculture Ordinance (FY2021-2030) states that "since the earthquake, wineries have been founded one after another in the prefecture, and wine is now being made at six sites," and describes a Miyagi Mariage promotion project pairing local wine with seasonal produce. In October 2019 the prefecture enacted a "Date-style toast" ordinance promoting local drinks — wine and craft beer alongside sake — as a way to support both the drinks trade and farming and fishing.

Climate
In an interview published on the prefecture's own website, the head of a winery in Akiu, Sendai, describes a difficulty that applies to growing grapes in Japan generally: harvest coincides with the autumn rains, so humidity and a shortage of sunshine make it hard for sugar levels to climb. According to the article, the winery's answer is appassimento — the drying technique used in northern Italy's Valpolicella Classico district — with the piece quoting that "grapes dried in Akiu's cool breezes concentrate their sugars and give the wine a distinctive dried-fruit character."
