These figures count the winery listings on this site. Every listing carries its own sources and verification date. Anything we could not verify is left out of the count, so the real numbers may be higher. A founding year may refer to the parent company — often a sake brewery — rather than the year winemaking began.

About this region

Kochi is a region where growers adapt their cultivation methods to a rainy climate. In the National Tax Agency's count of production sites that produced or shipped wine during 2024, Kochi had 4 wineries (519 nationwide). According to a prefectural article, Inoue Winery in Konan City began growing wine grapes in 2014 through its parent company's breeding division; at first the harvest was trucked to fermentation facilities in Shimane and Yamanashi, but once an in-house facility was built in the prefecture, growing, fermenting and selling could all be completed within Kochi. The same article notes vineyards in Nankoku and Konan cities, with expansion planned to Yusuhara, Sakawa and Kami.

Climate
A prefectural article states plainly that "Kochi's rainy climate is not a favourable condition for growing grapes," then explains that producers have introduced rain-sheltered trellis cultivation (a training system with a roof that keeps rain off the fruit) and thereby "reconcile grape growing with Kochi's rich natural setting, including abundant sunshine and a mild climate." Another prefectural page puts it as growing "grapes suited to the land, here in Kochi, which is said to be unsuited to grape cultivation."
