These figures count the winery listings on this site. Every listing carries its own sources and verification date. Anything we could not verify is left out of the count, so the real numbers may be higher. A founding year may refer to the parent company — often a sake brewery — rather than the year winemaking began.

About this region

The prefectural government lists Hioki, Satsumasendai, Satsuma, Izumi, Kirishima and Minamiosumi among Kagoshima's grape-growing areas, with fruit shipped from mid-July to mid-September. Winemaking is a relatively recent development: Satsumasendai City reports that a winery on the site of the former Choyo elementary school opened in June 2023 — the city's first — and that a wine made from Kyoho grapes grown in the city was completed the following year. The prefecture's own food information site also features a Kirishima farm that grows 31 grape varieties, selecting from among them the ones suited to wine and vinifying them on site, as an example of a farm-to-product venture.

Climate
According to the prefectural government, Kagoshima stretches roughly 600km from Nagashima in the north to Yoron in the south, and the climate differs sharply between the two ends. In Okuchi, Isa City, in the north, the average January minimum is -1.9°C, while Ibusuki in the south is mild enough for rapeseed flowers to bloom in January. The prefecture spans temperate and subtropical zones, and Yakushima — home to Kyushu's highest peak — has a cool-temperate side as well, so growing conditions vary a great deal depending on where in the prefecture a vineyard sits.
