These figures count the winery listings on this site. Every listing carries its own sources and verification date. Anything we could not verify is left out of the count, so the real numbers may be higher. A founding year may refer to the parent company — often a sake brewery — rather than the year winemaking began.

About this region

Wine in Kagawa is shaped by a local table-grape district and by university grape breeding. The Kagawa Prefecture Tourism Association's official site introduces Sanuki Winery in Sanuki City as "the first wine plant in Shikoku." Sanuki City states that the winery draws on grape growing in the Shido area and makes white, rosé and red wines from a range of grapes including Delaware and Bailey A (Muscat Bailey A), alongside fruit wines made from fruits other than grapes. The experimental farm of Kagawa University's Faculty of Agriculture records that its wine grape "Kodainou R-1" was registered as a variety in 2006, and that wine made from it is sold within the prefecture as a Kagawa University brand wine.

Climate
The experimental farm of Kagawa University's Faculty of Agriculture explains that in the warm south-western districts of Japan, including Kagawa, grapes colour up in the height of summer, and that extreme summer heat has long been noted as a cause of poor skin colouring. The farm states that Kodainou R-1 was bred to colour well even in high temperatures, crossing Ryukyuganebu — a wild grape native to Okinawa and Amami — as the mother with the greenhouse grape Muscat of Alexandria as the father. Heat here translates directly into the question of which grapes to plant.
