Buying without visiting — choosing between shops and online stores

Practical guide / Published 2026-08-27

Visiting a distant producer is not the only way to buy its wine. Listed shops and the producer’s official online store can make it possible to search without traveling. The strength of a source and the certainty of current stock are different things. Check who published the relationship, then confirm the final details with the shop or producer.

Who says that the shop carries it? The table divides producer–shop relationships by who published them. It distinguishes a producer’s own retailer list, the shop’s own website, and a third-party directory. The tiers indicate source strength, not shop status or wine quality.

Across 1032 shops. A shop can hold links of more than one tier, so the last column does not sum to the total. **Tiers run from strongest to weakest** — the producer's own list is the strongest.

Tier one is a relationship published by the producer as one of its retailers. It gives a direct route from producer to shop and is the best first lead. Tier two is a selection stated on the shop’s own site. Tier three is a relationship found in a third-party directory. The later tiers are useful for discovery, but their update date and inclusion conditions should be checked.

Stock must be checked separately Even a producer’s own list does not guarantee stock on the day you visit. Wines can be discontinued, rotated seasonally, sold out, or stocked differently at each shop. Once you find a shop, use its own site or call to confirm the wine, current stock, hours, closing days, holds, and sales method. A distant trip makes a last-minute check especially important.

A shop’s selection notice may not describe bottle-level stock. A directory may provide even less detail about its date or scope. Several tiers on one shop do not mean that the same product is always available. Ask about the specific wine you need.

Direct sales, online stores, and physical shops When no shop is nearby, the producer’s official online store is an option. The seller is clear and a specific wine can be selected, but shipping fees, minimum quantities, delivery dates, and refrigerated shipping may apply. Read the product and delivery information before deciding the quantity and receipt date.

At a physical shop, you may be able to see an opened wine and ask about storage or food pairing. Tastings and opened bottles differ by shop, so confirm first. Online stores make prices and stock easier to compare, while shops can offer advice and information about storage; choose according to the wine, distance, and quantity you need.

Our reading: Where to buy depends on each producer. Smaller producers may have fewer retailers, with stock concentrated at those locations. Start with the strongest tier, verify stock separately, and choose a shop nearby or official online sales when it is not.
