A South African cross giving a dark red with a distinctive smoky, roasted character.

Created in 1925 at Stellenbosch University in South Africa by crossing Pinot Noir with Cinsaut, it takes its name from both parents. It is planted widely at home as the country's signature variety. The wine is dark, with black-fruit aromas joined by a roasted, smoky note reminiscent of coffee — a character that divides opinion as often as it wins admirers. Plantings in Japan are very limited, currently in Ibaraki, Gunma, Nagano and Saga, and the wine suits charcoal-grilled and barbecued food.
