These figures count the winery listings on this site. Every listing carries its own sources and verification date. Anything we could not verify is left out of the count, so the real numbers may be higher. A founding year may refer to the parent company — often a sake brewery — rather than the year winemaking began.

About this region

Toyama packs dramatic relief into a small area: from the 3,000-metre peaks of the Tateyama range down to the 1,000-metre depths of Toyama Bay, a vertical span of some 4,000 metres. The Yamafuji vineyard (Horaisan Winery) in Fuchu, Toyama City, was planted in 1927 and obtained its winemaking licence in 1933. According to prefectural material, apart from that single early-twentieth-century winery, every winery in Toyama was founded after 2000, and most of their owners ran another business before turning to wine. Newer producers have since appeared in Nanto and Uozu, and the prefecture links this to bringing abandoned farmland back into use and creating new attractions for visitors.

Climate
The Toyama Local Meteorological Office gives the prefecture an average annual temperature of 14.5C and annual precipitation of 2,374.2 mm (normal values), with more falling in winter than in summer. It is described as one of the snowiest places in the world, recording a maximum snow depth of 262 cm on 10 February 1984. When the pressure pattern drives strong southerly winds, pronounced foehn conditions occur (air that has crossed the mountains arrives dry and hot), and summer afternoons can bring thunderstorms along the mountains and the coast.
