These figures count the winery listings on this site. Every listing carries its own sources and verification date. Anything we could not verify is left out of the count, so the real numbers may be higher. A founding year may refer to the parent company — often a sake brewery — rather than the year winemaking began.
About this region
Grapes in Nara are grown mainly for the table, and winemaking came later. Nara Prefecture states that grape growing here began with the introduction of Delaware in the late Meiji era, and names Heguri, Kawai, Tenri, Gojo and Shimoichi as the main producing areas. The prefecture also states that Delaware has the largest planted area of any variety in Nara at about 30 hectares, of which 20 hectares are in the Fushihara district of Heguri Town. On the winemaking side, the Japan Winery Association's winery directory lists Kitani Wine in Kashiba City. Its own site states that the founder went independent as a grape grower in 2018 with the aim of turning Nara-grown grapes into wine in Nara, farming with cover cropping instead of herbicides and without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers.
- Climate
- Heguri Town's official tourism site states that the vineyards of the Fushihara district — locally called "grape mountain" — lie on south- and east-facing slopes that catch the sun from early morning but see little evening sun, so temperatures fall quickly; it credits this daily temperature swing for well-coloured, sweet grapes. Nara Prefecture describes open-field Delaware as being picked in mid-July, very early among grape varieties.
