Grape growing in Mie is concentrated in the Iga area in the north-west of the prefecture. The Iga branch of the prefectural Agricultural Research Institute says vines were first planted here in the early Showa era (from the late 1920s) and that the area adopted quality-focused growing methods unusually early by national standards. Taken together, Nabari — where direct sales and pick-your-own tourism dominate — and Iga, centred on hill land opened up by a national farmland development scheme, form what the institute calls the largest grape-growing district in the prefecture; the prefecture's Iga Agriculture and Forestry Office likewise records that grapes and green asparagus are grown nowhere else in Mie.

Climate

The prefectural institute's Iga branch describes the area as the Ueno (Iga) Basin, ringed by mountain ranges and uplands, and lists a wide swing between high and low temperatures among its defining natural conditions. The same page states that "the local climate also suits fruit growing such as grapes and pears, and has given rise to popular districts producing high-quality fruit."

Soil

According to the same source, the Iga Basin lay on the bed of the ancient Lake Biwa — the predecessor of today's lake — four million years ago, so its soils are clay-rich deposits derived from that lake mud (the Kobiwako Group) and are described as containing abundant minerals.
