About this region

According to Kumamoto's official tourism site, wine-grape growing in the prefecture began around twenty years ago, centred on Kikuka in Yamaga City, and some 30 contracted farms now grow the fruit. Kikuka Winery opened in November 2018. The Japan Wineries Association notes that Kumamoto was once said to be unsuited to grape growing, making this a comparatively young wine region.

Climate
The prefecture's official tourism site describes the Kikuka area as well suited to winemaking, citing the gap between day and night temperatures and the elevation of the vineyards.
