These figures count the winery listings on this site. Every listing carries its own sources and verification date. Anything we could not verify is left out of the count, so the real numbers may be higher. A founding year may refer to the parent company — often a sake brewery — rather than the year winemaking began.
About this region
Winemaking in Fukushima has grown alongside the region's recovery from the 2011 earthquake and nuclear accident. Koriyama City records that Fukushima Ouse Winery was completed in October 2015 as a reconstruction-support project: a model business that turns locally grown fruit into alcoholic drinks and works with growers and local government to add processing and sales to farming. The Reconstruction Agency records that in Kawauchi Village grape growing began in 2016 with 2,100 vines planted, and that the village's Kawauchi Winery opened in 2021. Producers around the prefecture cooperate through the Fukushima Wine Regional Partnership Council on training, industry-academia-government exchange and wine tourism.
- Climate
- Fukushima Prefecture's official site Fuku-no-Sake states that Kawauchi Winery in Kawauchi Village sits at about 750 m above sea level, with vines on a south-facing slope that receive plenty of sunlight. The same site describes Tomioka Winery in Tomioka Town as having vineyards right beside the sea, exposed to salt-laden breezes. Sites therefore range from high inland plots to coastal ones within the same prefecture.
- Soil
- We could not find a document summarising soils across the whole prefecture, but the prefecture's official Fuku-no-Sake site describes individual sites. Grapes in Kawauchi Village are said to grow on well-draining granitic soil, and the vineyard of Fukushima Nouka no Yume Wine in Nihonmatsu City is described as former pesticide-free mulberry fields from the silk-farming era — ground that drains well and suited grape growing.
