How many gold awards are there? — The distribution of award tiers

Data / Published 2026-08-27

We place the award tiers from three competitions side by side while preserving the names published by each organiser. The table shows why the same-looking word “gold” does not have the same system or entry pool across competitions.

Three competitions, three systems

Does “gold” mean the same thing in every competition? This table places award records from the Japan Wine Competition, the International Wine Challenge, and the SAKURA Awards by tier. The three competitions do not use the same award system.

The Japan Wine Competition uses Japanese names including Grand Gold, Gold, Silver, and Bronze for Japanese wine. The International Wine Challenge uses Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Commended. The SAKURA Awards uses Diamond Trophy, Double Gold, Gold, and Silver, with special awards alongside them. All are wine-award records, but the wines assessed, the categories, and the way awards are decided differ by competition.

Why the published names remain

This site keeps the names published by each organiser instead of translating them into a common vocabulary. IWC Commended is not relabelled as the Japan Wine Competition’s Encouragement award, and SAKURA Double Gold is not reduced to the single word Gold. Harmonising the labels would make the display look simpler, but it would break the connection to the wording in the official results.

Award names are kept exactly as the organiser publishes them. They are mapped onto shared tiers only for sorting.

The English-label column helps readers check the wording used by the organiser. For display sorting only, nearby tiers are placed into a shared order. This does not claim that the awards were granted under identical criteria. When you need to identify a particular award, read the competition name and the published tier together.

Before comparing the counts

Our reading: Even when two competitions use the word “gold,” their entry pools, category structure, judging criteria, and award procedures may differ. Comparing the number of gold awards across competitions therefore tells us little by itself. The table is more useful as a map of each organiser’s award vocabulary and structure than as a conversion table for deciding which competition is “higher.”

For an individual wine or result year, continue to the competition award archive. There, the award name published by the organiser can be checked together with the producer and wine to which it belongs.
