A German cross bred for disease resistance, giving a deeply coloured red.

Bred in 1967 at a German grapevine-breeding institute, it was developed to carry resistance to downy and powdery mildew, two of the vine's most damaging diseases. Varieties of this kind attract interest internationally because they allow reduced spraying and can be grown where rainfall is high. The wine is deeply coloured, with black-fruit aromas and gentle tannin. Its relevance to Japan's wet, humid climate is clear, but plantings recorded here remain very limited — currently a producer in Yoichi, Hokkaido.
