Very dark in colour with supple tannin and generous black-fruit aromas.
Known for the dark wines of Cahors in South-West France, it was also widely planted in Bordeaux in the nineteenth century. After reaching Argentina in the twentieth century it became that country's signature grape, and most Malbec drunk today is South American. The wine is a deep purple-red with pronounced plum and blackberry aromas, while the tannin usually feels rounded rather than sharp. Plantings in Japan are very limited, currently in Nagano, and the wine pairs naturally with grilled beef and other well-charred meat.
Notes on aroma and taste describe general tendencies for this grape, not claims about any particular wine — the actual character depends on the producer and how it is made.
For this grape we have not yet confirmed a primary source for its origin or growing regions. (Winery entries always carry a source and the date it was checked.)
