This view reads the long-running public results of the Japan Wine Competition through the spread of producers with awards, rather than award counts alone. Comparing that with the producers listed in each prefecture shows how widely the records are distributed.

What is counted
The Japan Wine Competition is a domestic competition for Japanese wine, organised by the Japan Wine Competition Executive Committee. Its official site publishes results from its early years through the latest edition, linking each result to a wine, producer, award, and brewing location. We import those public results as individual wine-award records and match the producer names to the producer IDs used on this site.
The prefecture in this table comes from the producer record to which each result was matched on this site. This is not a simple total of award records by prefecture. Repeated awards for the same producer, across wines or years, are collapsed when we ask how broadly producers with awards are distributed.
How to read the order
The rows are arranged by the number of distinct producers with an award, not by the number of award records. A single producer may have entered many wines over many years, and those records can otherwise dominate the view. Counting producers makes it easier to see whether the recorded awards are concentrated or spread across a wider set of producers. The order is a way to display distribution, not a ranking of prefectures.

The “share of producers listed” compares producers with a confirmed Japan Wine Competition award in that prefecture with all producers listed on this site for the same prefecture. It is not a share of all awards, and it is not a quality score. In a prefecture with a small listed base, one producer can change the appearance of the percentage substantially.
Why award counts are not enough
Our reading: A prefecture with more award records cannot automatically be called a better wine region. The number of producers entering, the wines they enter, how long they have been active, and the span of public results covered here all differ. This table is meant to show which producers in which prefectures have a verifiable award record, not to place regions in a hierarchy.
