How competition awards have changed over the years

Data / Published 2026-08-27

A year-by-year view of awards can show how wine competitions around Japanese wine have expanded. What is counted here is the set of records that could be imported from official results as Japanese-wine awards. Read the boundary of the dataset before interpreting any rise or fall.

What is being counted The table places each competition’s award records by year. It counts Japanese-wine awards that could be imported from official results published by organizers or other responsible sources. It is not the total number announced publicly and not a combined official result.

Counts of awards that could be attributed to a Japanese producer. Rows that could not be attributed (for example when the winery could not be identified) are excluded, so these are not the organisers' published totals. **A zero has two meanings.** The Japan Wine Competition was not held in 2020 or 2021. Not held because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The organising committee's own 2022 announcement describes that year as the first competition in three years, confirming that 2019 was followed by 2022. Any other zero means that year is not covered here yet.

Results without a confirmed producer or wine name are not safely linkable and are left out. Filling the gap could attach a result to the wrong producer or duplicate the same wine.

Even within one competition, result fields and naming can change over time. During import, we check the official source and include only records where the producer and wine relationship can be read. Keeping the scope narrow makes the records auditable later. For this reason, compare not only the size of a column but also whether the records share a clear origin.

Not zero, but not imported A missing year does not mean that no award was given. It means that the result for that year was not imported. An official page may be unavailable, the publication format may have changed, or the result may not be confirmable as Japanese wine. This table does not turn an unverified state into zero.

Competitions also differ in scope, history, and surviving archives. Rather than adding their columns into one broad trend, check which organizer’s records are actually included.

Even when several results appear for the same year, each column is a separate group of records. Keeping the differences visible helps prevent the imported scope from being confused with the scope that remains unverified.

How to read changes by year Our reading: Changes in the count can reflect changes in entries, competition scale or categories, and publication practices. The table alone cannot show that the quality of Japanese wine changed year by year. It shows movements in verifiable award records, not a quality score.

To investigate a wine, move from the table to its individual award record and check the wine name, producer, variety, and source in that order. When comparing records, keep the import boundary in view and consult the official announcement for the year that matters.
